  • How do you design a versatile
    retail packaging system that
    is genuinely different?
  • Electronics brand Sprout wanted to replace the generic clear box packaging for its range of fashion and non-fashion mobile phone accessories with a unique, eco-friendly packaging system, consistent with the cheeky personality of the brand.
A range of unconventional structural packaging formats were explored.
Pack directions were quickly mocked up to compare the concepts on functionality, look and feel.
  • Formed pulp or “3D cardboard” is often used for coarse, utilitarian trays hidden inside a glossy cosmetic display box.

We decided to give it a smooth finish and make it an external visual, structural and tactile feature.
For the fashion cases, it was vital to be able to see the product.
The concept incorporated two pulp trays - a common outer for structure, and an inner tray customised to securely hold specific accessories.
  • Working with the Brand Manager, we decided to completely eliminate any tamper evidence, so that packaged accessories could be restored to pristine condition.
Research revealed that common tamper-evident features hindered retailers’ ability to re-shelve and re-sell accessories after demonstrating to customers.
  • Consumers are reluctant to purchase fashion accessories until seeing them on their phone...
... and non fashion accessories without checking the connector compatibility.
  • Hang sell feature is built in to the sleeve to minimise parts
For fashion packs, graphics are printed directly to the clear PET sleeve, providing high visibility and eliminating the need for label separation before recycling.
  • Tactile logo embossed moulded in without adding to part price
For non-fashion packs, product visibility was less important, enabling us to have fun with the form.

  • Unsold stock can be re-shelved for future sale, reducing product and packaging waste while boosting profits
