Challenge

The wrong-length jump rope problem

Rx Smart Gear's customers were losing fitness gains to a problem nobody thinks to blame: an incorrectly sized rope. Adjusting length usually meant tools, guesswork or a rope you cut once and lived with. Rx needed length adjustment that was instant, tool-free and durable enough for daily training.

Ten settings, one button, no tools

We designed an indexed stem inside each handle that captures the rope tip in one of five positions, for ten total settings across 200mm of adjustment, released with a single button press. Dual bearings in each handle give a smooth, frictionless spin, and a tapered elastomer grip reduces forearm fatigue over long sets.

Outcome

RapidFit became the world's first dual-bearing jump rope with tool-free length adjustment, and won the Sport and Active Lifestyle prize at the 2018 Good Design Awards. It's since been exhibited in the National Gallery of Victoria's Melbourne Now design collection.

Technical Insights:

Mechanical engineering (Capability)

Rx needed the rope to have intuitive mechanical operation and easy adjustability in seconds. We designed the rope to adjust in small increments. It has ergonomically designed handles for grip tension and is highly durable with low resistance for efficient rotation. It’s twist and tangle free.
