Micro water treatment plant

Many communities in remote regions lack reliable access to clean drinking water, relying instead on unsafe or expensive systems. Water Source Australia set out to change this with Brolga, a remote-controlled micro water treatment plant designed to provide safe, continuous drinking water anywhere in the world.

Outerspace partnered with Water Source to take an early-stage prototype and transform it into a manufacturable product. Our role included developing the architecture, electronics, firmware, and mechanical systems, while working closely with Water Source’s software and water treatment experts. Together, we shaped a system capable of producing up to 30,000 litres of safe drinking water a day, suitable for installation in the toughest environments.

From the outset, Outerspace applied a holistic, end-to-end approach. We unpacked and redefined the system architecture, balancing the complexities of multiple filtration and sterilisation stages with the need for simplicity and reliability. Our designers and engineers collaborated with Water Source to establish the aesthetic, mechanical layout, and electronic framework, while ensuring the system met Australian and WHO water standards. Key to the solution was the integration of IoT connectivity. Brolga’s inbuilt ‘brain’ continuously monitors system health, anticipates issues, and autonomously resolves them — ensuring uninterrupted delivery of safe drinking water. This connectivity allows remote operators to monitor performance through dashboards, receive alerts, and even reconfigure systems without being on-site, dramatically reducing service costs and downtime.

Brolga’s development required deep collaboration across mechanical, electronic, and firmware engineering teams. The mechanical engineers optimized the housing and component layout for durability, portability, and scalability — designing a unit robust enough for harsh outdoor conditions while compact enough to transport by truck or container. Multiple units can also be networked together to meet higher capacity needs.   On the technical side, our electronics and firmware engineers overcame challenges of system complexity by creating a secure architecture that integrates pumps, sensors, and filtration stages with cloud-based monitoring. A sophisticated control system collects over 20 data points every second, making intelligent decisions to guarantee water quality. This balance of robust mechanical engineering and advanced IoT systems made Brolga a groundbreaking product: the smallest autonomous water treatment plant of its kind, delivering safe, affordable drinking water to communities that need it most.
