Embedded Systems and Electronic Engineering

Our electronic engineers are focused on the embedded systems of products. Electronic engineering starts with requirements and early strategic architecture decisions depending on the goals of the project and product. At outerspace, electronic engineering focuses on the electronic hardware for sensing, control, and communication of devices, including wireless communication linking into IoT.

“Our long association with Outerspace has delivered substantial benefits to our development process. This has resulted in medical products that now receive international attention and are achieving record sales.”

Warwick Freeman – Compumedics

“Outerspace proved to be the ideal partner working closely with our hardware design, manufacturing and software teams around the world to realise our vision”

Geoffrey Wanless

As electronic engineers we're broad problem solvers. We bridge the gap into solutions with other design and engineering disciplines.

We define a product into tangible components, with electronics architecture and specification. We apply circuit design and engineering, using simulation tools. Using Altium Designer our team designs detailed PCB schematic capture and layout. By providing fast turn-around prototyping using product partners, with small batch assembly we meet project goals. We test and verify prototypes; and create the software for your hardware with firmware development for embedded systems.

Wearable products

Our team has extensive experience in the development of wearable and low power products, utilising current design techniques based on what the product needs. We specify low power or ultra-efficient microcontrollers and multi-core microprocessors – Arm® Cortex®-M0+, M33 and M4. We design connected products using cellular connectivity – 4G LTE / 5G, or other wireless technologies – Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. We utilise Bare Metal or RTOS embedded firmware development, with experience in FreeRTOS and Zephr, with trade-off between energy efficiency, computation performance, security and range of peripherals for the product.

Vision and image capture

We design vision and image capture systems using devices such as CMOS image and thermal image sensors. We use Ethernet and high-speed USB products, for real time streaming of image outputs with Linux based operating systems on-board, for edge computing and image handling.

Industrial products

We work with our clients to understand their technical challenges across applications that require industrial and automotive-grade design. We use radio and communications links designed for a specific purpose, with data acquisition and analog-to-digital conversion (ADC), engineered and designed to high precision and accuracy – error budgets and circuit verification. We use best-in-class manufacturers like STMicroelectronics, Nordic Semiconductor and Texas Instruments

Medical devices

We work on medical devices that are designed to the highest standards, with low cost, disposable electronics designed to specification. We use Bare Metal style firmware, ensuring high reliability and criticality is achieved. We design within the relevant standards, such as ISO 60601, and use highly supported component families, such as the STM32 family of microcontrollers.

Product Rendering for the Outerspace designed Exercise bike. Designed to have a unique clutch and gamify exercise.

Touch activated spin and touring bike

A developer of interactive fitness equipment with integrated gaming software, needed to develop a new combination spin and exercise bike for the boutique gymnasium and home gym markets.

They wanted to develop a never-seen-before bike that had two distinct modes of operation – spin and exercise bike mode to be housed in one hardware system, operated by a touch screen and supported by their software.

Product photo for the Outerspace designed Thermal Camera for 1MK. Designed to pinpoint stress points before they happen!

Thermal imaging camera

Outerspace’s multidisciplinary team worked with the managing director of LRM Technologies and researchers at DST Group, to design the 1mK thermal camera that quantifies the stresses that cause metal fatigue in aircraft. LRM, a distributor of lasers and thermal imaging cameras, own the licence to apply Defence Science and Technology group software to a thermal camera product idea. LRM’s managing director had a very clear idea about what the DST Group technology could achieve and needed a clear product roadmap to a successful physical product outcome. Outerspace collaborated with LRM and DST Group to clearly identify and plan the product format and pathway needed to create this revolutionary thermal camera.

Product rendering of the Outerspace designed Light My Bricks kit. Flexible PCBS, modular LEDS and wiring designed specifically to work with Lego kits.

LED lighting kits for LEGO

Light My Bricks approached Outerspace to help expand beyond their maker-focused lighting accessories for LEGO®, with a goal of creating a consumer-friendly product range. The challenge was to design a system that was simple, safe, and intuitive, while still allowing flexibility and integration into LEGO® sets.

Outerspace’s task was to reimagine the electronics, usability, and product architecture to deliver a new Night Mode range — one that could bring lighting effects to LEGO® creations without the complexity of traditional wiring.

Product images of the Outerspace designed Micro water filtration system for Watersource. The unit delivers 30 000 Litres of fresh drinking water daily. The image shows the unit installed in regional Australia

Micro water treatment plant

Many communities in remote regions lack reliable access to clean drinking water, relying instead on unsafe or expensive systems. Water Source Australia set out to change this with Brolga, a remote-controlled micro water treatment plant designed to provide safe, continuous drinking water anywhere in the world.

Outerspace partnered with Water Source to take an early-stage prototype and transform it into a manufacturable product. Our role included developing the architecture, electronics, firmware, and mechanical systems, while working closely with Water Source’s software and water treatment experts. Together, we shaped a system capable of producing up to 30,000 litres of safe drinking water a day, suitable for installation in the toughest environments.
