With years of experience in Class 1 and Class 2 medical product development, we translate and help verify our client’s core technologies into viable manufacturable products.

In the complex neurological device sector we design devices and systems to treat epilepsy; sleep monitoring systems to detect sleep disorders and prevent sleep apnoea; and devices used to treat nerve damage.

We are an integral partner in ophthalmic instrument and device development. We’ve developed tonometers, corneal topographic imaging systems and surgical tools to guide ophthalmic surgery.

Wearable personal kinetigraph

Global Kinetics set out to modernize their Personal KinetiGraph (PKG) smart watch — a device used to monitor Parkinson’s Disease tremors — to look and feel like an everyday wearable. The original version, essentially an accelerometer in a box, had evolved into a functional but clinical wrist-worn device. Global Kinetics needed a next-generation design that retained its powerful medical monitoring capabilities while removing the stigma of wearing an obvious medical device.

Outerspace partnered with Global Kinetics during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, navigating supply shortages and remote working challenges. By combining our expertise in medical device development, electronics, and industrial design, we helped transform the PKG watch into a discreet, smart, patient-friendly product ready for clinical and research applications.

Wearable neurology monitor

Okti is a wearable, high-density electro-encephalogram amplifier or EEG. Outerspace worked with neurological device manufacturer, Compumedics, to design Okti for rapid set up by a clinician, to analyse brain conditions while patients are mobile. Optimised for children, Okti provides crucial diagnosis of brain disorders to enable early and effective treatment.

Negative pressure wound therapy device

Varivac set out to create ARC, a variable vacuum wound drainage pump designed for patients recovering from surgery. Unlike traditional hospital-based systems, ARC needed to be low-cost, compact, lightweight, and quiet enough for patients to comfortably use at home. The device also had to meet strict medical safety standards while giving patients more independence in their recovery.

Outerspace worked closely with Varivac to take on this challenge. Our multidisciplinary team provided design, engineering, and development expertise to transform the concept into a fully realized medical device, ready for safe, effective, and affordable use in both hospital and home environments. A unique algorithm was written to detect blockages and leakages from a single pressure sensor input only, in order to ensure high functionality with low cost.

Emergency stretcher

The founder of Meditech 4 Sports wanted to improve the way athletes with lower limb injuries are carried to safety for medical attention.

The importance of obtaining consent and the use of appropriate carrying methods for athletes with lower limb injuries in ball sports and gymnastics was the priority.

The portable emergency stretcher has been adopted by sporting leagues, private corporations, and law enforcement groups. It deploys in seconds to easily transport injured people to safety as quickly as possible without causing injury to both the injured and rescuers.
