Pinakesh De is a senior industrial designer at outerspace. With a degree in biotechnology and a Masters in Industrial Design. He’s passionate about designing medical and scientific devices and products to support healthy living.
He sees empathy as the common thread in biotechnology, medicine and design. Whether a person is a patient or a user of a product design, empathy is a vital skill to have in order to understand and apply expertise to a problem.
Before working at outerspace, Pinakesh worked in Japan, starting out in the “production line of corporate product design”, as a UX designer for Toshiba TV interfaces, then moving to laptop and hardware design at Panasonic.
In a specialist studio at Panasonic, he designed new products with new technologies, including the world’s first high dynamic range, ultra high definition, VR eyeglasses, and the smallest on the market, well before Meta and others started using ‘pancake’ lenses.
He doesn’t follow short term design trends. He loves the classic design techniques of Eames and the Bauhaus, where the newness of a design comes from the unique functions of a product.
He likes to create new design elements from product functions. Depending on the project, he often works with outerspace engineers to define how a product functions and the mechanical details, to then develop a custom design solution.
form and function in product design
Pinakesh supports the saying “form follows function” and design that comes from the unique functions of a product. He says usability is most important in product design, and creating beautiful ergonomic surfaces and design is not only about aesthetics.
Like many designers, his design process doesn’t follow a linear path. It’s iterative and involves sketching, model making, 3D CAD modeling and 3D printing.
Most of all, Pinakesh enjoys working directly with clients and providing the outcomes and solutions that make them happy and feeling they’ve invested in something good.
