LED lighting kits for LEGO

Light My Bricks approached Outerspace to help expand beyond their maker-focused lighting accessories for LEGO®, with a goal of creating a consumer-friendly product range. The challenge was to design a system that was simple, safe, and intuitive, while still allowing flexibility and integration into LEGO® sets.

Outerspace’s task was to reimagine the electronics, usability, and product architecture to deliver a new Night Mode range — one that could bring lighting effects to LEGO® creations without the complexity of traditional wiring.

Our electronic engineering team developed a flexible circuit board system to replace traditional wiring, making installation simpler and allowing cables to slide neatly between LEGO® bricks. We condensed multiple effects boards into one compact unit — the FX Spectrum — which delivers a variety of lighting effects through a tiny 3×3 LEGO® footprint. To ensure seamless power management, we designed fused Dock systems that prevent incorrect connections, alongside accessories like the Eclipse cable clip, Flux battery pack, and Meteor Lights. This holistic redesign gave users a safe, intuitive way to add lighting and special effects to their LEGO® builds.

The engineering team tackled the challenge of miniaturising complex electronics while maintaining safety and durability. They created flexible boards robust enough to withstand handling, developed firmware on an STM 32 microcontroller to control LED sequences, and designed interfaces that balanced technical performance with user-friendly operation. Mechanical and usability studies ensured that cables and components could be threaded through intricate LEGO® structures without snagging. By merging electronics, firmware, and mechanical insight, Outerspace delivered a consumer-ready product system that not only elevated LEGO® builds but also won a Good Design Award for innovation.
