Smartwatch meets fashion

Most smartwatches on the market lean heavily into a sporty or gadget-like aesthetic, making them look out of place compared to classic watches. Method Copenhagen wanted to break this trend by creating a smartwatch that felt more like a refined Danish timepiece than a piece of consumer electronics.

The challenge was to disguise advanced technology in a minimal, fashion-led design, while ensuring comfort, usability, and manufacturability. Outerspace’s and the Method team set out to merge industrial design, branding, and UI into one coherent and stylish wearable.

The design strategy focused on creating an iconic, minimal aesthetic; rooted in Danish design principles. Key features included elegantly designed lugs, a raised glass profile reminiscent of classic watches, and refined CMF choices that communicated timeless style. The raised glass presented a major technical challenge, as it had never been attempted in a smartwatch — requiring entirely new component stacking and assembly solutions. Prototyping with 3D prints helped refine form, ergonomics, and proportions early on. Collaboration with our manufacturing partner was critical in developing solutions that balanced aesthetic goals with technical feasibility. This close partnership allowed the team to retain the raised glass feature without compromising design integrity.

The smartwatch required innovative engineering to achieve its slim appearance while housing complex electronics. Engineers rethought component stacking to reduce thickness and ensure the raised glass could integrate seamlessly with the touch display. Mechanical and digital designers collaborated closely with suppliers to resolve manufacturability while preserving the high-end look. On the digital side, UX and UI design were developed in tandem with the industrial design, ensuring the software experience matched the sophistication of the physical product. The final working prototype combined advanced software, premium CMF finishes, and precise engineering — successfully delivering a smartwatch that feels as elegant as a fashion accessory, yet functions as advanced wearable tech
