closed loop charging design in the spotlight

OneDock by microFleet has been named a finalist in the 2024 Victorian Premier’s Design Awards.

OneDock is the most affordable, robust and flexible Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) infrastructure platform in the world. It can be deployed across many sectors to meet the diverse mobility needs of workers, residents, students, tourists and couriers.

microFleet created OneDock to meet global demand for LEV locking, charging, tracking and sharing, with outerspace leading the design and development.

The platform supports inclusive LEV fleets, including mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs for people with mobility impairments.

OneDock’s clean and sleek design with embedded smart technology, elevates LEV infrastructure from rudimentary analogue bike racks to a future-proof networked digital platform.

Its OneKey smart charging lock is attached to any LEV in five minutes, replacing inconvenient bike locks and portable chargers.

The OneDock platform includes GPS tracking, motion detection, a user app and fleet management software – everything required to run a shared LEV fleet to serve diverse mobility needs.

Non-compliant LEV batteries and chargers create a major fire hazard in homes and workplaces. OneDock mitigates this risk with a unique closed-loop charging system that precludes non-compliant chargers and batteries.

Its robust design deters vehicle theft via a charging cable reinforced with a hardened steel chain, while embedded GPS enables vehicle tracking and recovery.

The outerspace design team focused on understanding user needs; microFleet’s commercial drivers; environmental and regulatory risk factors; and engineering and manufacturing requirements, before designing a solution that best balanced all of these factors.

While the underlying technology platform is complex, the mechanical and mobile software user interface is elegant and simple.

OneDock was developed with circular design philosophy at its heart. It incorporates more than 95% recyclable materials and components that can be disassembled and recycled at end of life, with minimal use of plastics.

The new closed-loop charging system is working to drive the transition from using heavy, polluting, inefficient vehicles such as cars, to decentralised, light transport systems.
