underwater communication system
challenge:
Provide water sports athletes with a waterproof, durable wireless headset that allows users to communicate coaching instructions, music and other broadcasts in real-time above and below water.
insight:
Existing waterproof headset technology doesn’t allow for real time communications. Bluetooth doesn’t work under water, conventional antennas are too big for water sports and in-ear headphones aren’t ideal when you need to hear other things happening around you.
result:
Innovation in underwater bone conduction, radio transmission, antenna design and advanced manufacturing is combined into a fully-functional streaming watersports communication system.
some of our projects
We’ve been developing successful products for over three decades. We’re vibrant, nimble and smart. We love challenges and collaborating with clients.
We believe great products make the world a better place. Our passion to develop successful and meaningful products with a positive impact, drives us to achieve the best outcomes for our clients.
At outerspace we use a multidisciplinary approach to product development across a broad range of industries and markets. Working across design, engineering and technology we manage the complete product development process from end to end. We start by identifying the problem, then define and develop the product solution and manage the production of successful products.
challenge:
Make brain monitoring less scary and restrictive. Design a portable brain activity monitor for young patients that’s fun to wear, gives freedom of movement, and lowers anxiety.
insight:
Epilepsy and brain monitoring usually requires a patient to lie still while wearing many wires and electrodes. Patients can be attached to a device, in a clinical setting, for hours. Young patients find this very scary and distressing.
result:
The small wearable neurology monitor, encased in a soft backpack, gives young patients freedom to move around and lets them have fun and relax, while being monitored.

challenge:
Engineer an integrated camera that can visualise and capture thermal images and time correlate them to a force being applied on a material.
insight:
Aviation corporations needed a new way to visually detect early signs of stress in aircraft structures for aging fleets and new aircraft designs.
result:
The integrated thermal and visual camera is perfectly suited to preventative maintenance, health monitoring and analysis of the structural integrity of aircraft. The camera detects small temperature changes, detecting stress and strain before structural cracks emerge.

underwater headset system
challenge:
Provide water sports athletes and enthusiasts with a waterproof, rugged, durable wireless headset that receives coaching instructions, music and other broadcasts above and below water.
insight:
Existing waterproof headset technology doesn’t provide an ability to receive real time signals and instructions. Bluetooth doesn’t work underwater, conventional antennas are too large for water sports and in-ear headphones aren’t ideal when you need to hear other things happening around you.
result:
Innovation in underwater bone conduction, radio transmission, antenna design and advanced manufacturing was combined into a world's first fully functional streaming watersports headset
some of our projects
challenge:
The design called for an integrated camera that can visualise and capture thermal images and time correlate them to a force that is being applied on a material.
insight:
outerspace devised a ‘reverse brief’ process to clearly understand what the new camera product might be and to clearly derive its features and requirements.
result:
The camera is perfectly suited to preventative maintenance and health monitoring of defence force aircraft and the analysis of structural integrity of aircraft.

challenge:
Provide total smartphone protection without ruining the iPhone’s aesthetics, compromising on functionality or user experience.
insight:
outerspace developed highly engineered case features for the phone sensors, buttons and connectors, using a mix of materials and mass production technologies.
result:
The sophisticated flagship LifeProof for iPhone launched as the thinnest, lightest case providing dust, drop and waterproof protection.
